This September 7th, Ahuachapán will once again shine with a tradition that has transcended generations and remains alive in the heart of every Aguachapaneco.
Artisans and families devote entire weeks to crafting structures, designs, and lanterns that fill the streets with color and faith. As the date approaches especially in the final week the avenues gradually begin to glow, unveiling the magic and spirit of the festival with every light that comes alive.
For our community, keeping the tradition of the Farolitos alive means preserving our very essence as Ahuachapanecos. The Farolitos not only represent a celebration that identifies our town, but also a way of expressing our faith, as we fill with light and joy the eve of the Virgin Mary’s birth. It is a tradition that unites our culture, our history, and our faith, making us feel deeply proud of being from Ahuachapán“

This is a tradition meant to be passed down from generation to generation and young people play a very important role, they are the creative heart of the celebration, bringing new ideas for structures, decorations, and themes, while never forgetting where the tradition was born.
By sharing this celebration, we reaffirm our pride in being Salvadorans and our commitment to ensuring that this cultural heritage continues to shine into the future.
Recommendations to enjoy the Farolitos in Ahuachapán
Patience and arrive early: during the celebration, many visitors come and the streets can get quite crowded.
Water and comfortable shoes: to truly appreciate everything Ahuachapán has prepared for that night, you’ll need to walk a lot and explore different parts of the city.
Visit the parishes: many of them are also illuminated with farolitos and prepare beautiful altars dedicated to the Virgin Niña.
Bring a camera or phone: make sure you have enough storage space, because it’s a night full of incredible moments and scenes to capture.
Umbrella at hand: the weather can be unpredictable, and an umbrella will let you enjoy the celebration without worrying about the rain.
